Ernest Jayne, 81, prominent Flat Gap resident, died October 18, at his home after a brief illness.
He was the son of the late Henry and Julia Hager Jayne. He was born in this county January 16, 1879, and had been a lifelong resident of Flat Gap. He was married September 29, 1906, to Minnie Holbrook of Martha, Ky. A daughter, Hazel, preceded hi m in death January 6, 1912, and also a brother and sister, Irvin Jayne, and Augusta Williams. Mr. Jayne was well known in business circles, as well as a successful farmer. He was instrumental in the early development of the oil and gas industry i n the local area, and pursued this interest throughout his lifetime. As a civic-minded citizen, he made many valuable contributions to his beloved Johnson county. He was influential in the development of roads in the county and improvement in th e educational field. He had high regard and great respect for the people of his home community, county and state. He carried with him through the years the memory of many people he had known during his childhood and early adulthood. He served as M agistrate in District Four for two terms, and worked endlessly in the interest of the people, and will be sadly missed by his host of friends. He was a member of Flat Gap Lodge F&AM for more than fifty years. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Minnie H olbrook Jayne, four sons, Dr. Edgar P. Jayne, Storrs, Conn; Dr. H.H. Jayne, Ashland; James E. Jayne, Flat Gap; William E. Jayne, Forest Park, Ga.; three daughters, Mrs. Leora Skaggs, Paintsville; Mrs. Carrie Faye Jones, Prestonsburg; and Mrs. Iren e Gardner, Des Moines, Iowa. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m., October 21 at the Mayo Mehodist Church, Paintsville, with Rev. Charles Perry and Rev. O.M. Zimmerman off iciating. Active pallbearers were Mort Mullins, Tollie Meade, Henry Holbrook, Pont Dobyns, Dean Williams, Elmon Davis, Edd Redd and Frank Wells.
